Business logic as the foundation
How Top Bakkers connected nearly fifty bakeries in a single ERP system

Manual processing in the order-to-cash process
Top Bakkers is a nationwide trading company that connects nearly fifty artisan, regionally focused bakeries with major B2B customers, such as hotel chains, retailers and healthcare organizations. From the outside, the setup is straightforward: customers have a single point of contact, receive one invoice and place their orders through one platform.
Behind that simplicity, however, lies considerable operational complexity, with tens of thousands of small transactions every day, each with its own pricing agreements and delivery terms. The only way to make this work was to build a solution around Top Bakkers’ business logic. Today, the entire commercial process runs on the Thinkwise Platform, from order to invoice.

For years, Top Bakkers worked with a financial software package that did its job, until the organization outgrew it. Assortment management was largely manual, price lists and product data were spread across different locations, and as the network of bakeries grew, maintaining consistency became increasingly difficult.
A standard ERP package seemed like the obvious next step, but proved to be a poor fit. Large ERP systems impose requirements on product data, such as standardized product codes, fixed category structures and uniform input fields, which artisan bakeries simply cannot meet. In addition, many of these packages charge per transaction, while Top Bakkers handles large volumes of small orders with small margins. The new platform needed to process data from the different systems used by the affiliated bakeries and convert it into a single, uniform standard. A standard ERP solution would have required extensive additional customization and would not have aligned sufficiently with Top Bakkers’ specific business logic.

Thinkwise started with one specific requirement: an assortment management module that matched the way Top Bakkers actually worked. Not generic functionality, but an application that followed its business logic, with the right pricing hierarchies, product structures and customer-specific agreements.
That first module worked. Top Bakkers saw that the same approach could also work for other processes and deliberately expanded the application to include customer data, contacts, suppliers and integrations with the e-commerce platform. The platform now forms the complete functional core of the ERP system.
This was possible because Thinkwise uses model-driven development: changes are made at model level, after which the platform automatically handles validation, deployment and the corresponding database changes – without manual scripts or complex migrations. The business logic is structurally embedded in the platform: which bakery is allowed to offer which product, how prices are calculated for each customer, and which steps an order goes through before it is invoiced. Every extension automatically follows the same structure. As a result, further development is no longer an external, lengthy project, but something Top Bakkers can manage and drive itself. The solution was developed in collaboration with Thinkwise partner SLTN.

“Your organization’s logic should be embedded in your system, not built around it.”
Orders are processed, invoiced and completed without manual processing as standard. Thinkwise acts as the central system that brings the various processes together, with integrations to the financial software, scanning solutions and the e-commerce platform.
For employees in customer service, finance, quality and operations, screens and logic are tailored to what they actually need to do, making it clear where each type of data belongs. The underlying data is immediately available for reporting and analysis.
The application also continues to evolve, together with Thinkwise partner SLTN. One recent example: bakeries can use their own Thinkwise environment to view their assortment and assign promotional labels to products. These labels are immediately reflected in the e-commerce ordering environment for customers. This allows bakeries to run local promotions with their own promotional prices, without any intervention from Top Bakkers.

“Your organization’s logic should be embedded in your system – not built around it,” says Information Manager Jacob de Groot. At Top Bakkers, that is exactly what has happened since the partnership with Thinkwise began ten years ago.
Standard packages may seem attractive, but as soon as an organization has specific business logic, the choice is simple: either the organization adapts to the system, or the system is stretched with customization until it becomes unmanageable. Neither was an option for Top Bakkers. A platform like Thinkwise requires a different approach: you build the foundations yourself. That approach pays off because your organization’s logic is embedded in the system rather than sitting alongside it.
For Top Bakkers, that is exactly what has made the difference. The platform enforces business rules, keeps processes consistent and ensures that the organization can deliver on its promises day after day, both to around 50 bakeries and to the major customers that rely on them.

“We started with assortment management and built from there. Today, the platform is at the core of our processes. The next step is to use that same business logic for further automation, data analysis and AI support. This allows the system to continue evolving alongside our organization.”
